APFP site visit to Ghana in January 2014

In January 2014 the second site visit was undertaken to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Ghana by four Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) supervisors from different Health and rehabilitation Therapy disciplines: Prof Brenda Morrow (APFP Deputy Director, Ancillary head APFP/physiotherapy); Dr Shamiel Salie; APFP committee member (paediatric critical care); Sameer Rahim (head of physiotherapy) and Vivienne Norman (speech therapy, University lecturer). During the site visit, the APFP team ran several workshops, provided clinical advice and expertise during ward rounds and outpatient clinics; and presented a three-day Critical Care Update Course and Basic Paediatric Life Support course. This visit differed from previous site visits with a more organised educational course-driven element to it.

APFP site visit to Kenya from 24–27 August 2014

Dr Kirsty Donald (Head of Developmental Paediatrics) attended and presented at the International Congress of Tropical Paediatrics (ICTP) from 24–27 August 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr Donald acted as APFP ambassador at the ICTP Congress. Dr Donald had the opportunity to meet with past trainees, especially Dr Pauline Samia who trained under the APFP and became the first formally accredited child neurologist in Kenya. During this meeting Dr Samia was promoted to the position of associate professor. Dr Donald had extensive ongoing discussion with the KPA committee (including the chair Dr David Githanga) – this national body has representatives from across Kenya. Current and past APFP trainees are members of the KPA committee (Dr Paulina Samia, Dr Lawrence Okongo, and Dr Ombeva Malande). Dr Donald also visited the main hospitals caring for children in Nairobi.

APFP site visit to Zimbabwe from 17–21 November 2014

An APFP team conducted a site visit to Zimbabwe from 17–21 November 2014. This included visits to centres in both Bulawayo and Harare. Prof Jo Wilmshurst (Director of APFP), Dr Lloyd Tooke (Neonatology consultant) and Dr Heloise Buys (Rehabilitation and Emergency Medicine Consultant and General Paediatric Training Committee member) formed part  of the APFP team. The team met with all relevant key stakeholders at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo and Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare. In addition to the meetings, the team also presented lectures and partook in ward rounds.


Report Back of site visit to Sudan from 13–17 October 2014 by Dr Peter Nourse

Dr Peter Nourse (consultant paediatric nephrologist at RCWMCH) conducted a 3-day site visit from 13–17 October 2014. During this visit, Dr Nourse presented at the Nephrology day, equivalent to The UCT Refresher Course. He visited the Soba Hospital, the main university hospital of Khartoum University and the Gaafar Ibn Ouf Hospital. He, also, met with the Head of the Sudanese Medical Council and the Head of Sudan Paediatric Medical specialization Board. Read site visit report
